West African History on the Fingernail
In Collaboration with Martin Tamba
In this project, I collaborated with Martin Tamba to reimagine the images using mixed media techniques. Together, we breathed new life into the historical significance of cowrie shells through our creative approach, blending traditional elements with contemporary artistry.
Cowrie shells have been a significant part of West African history, used extensively as a form of currency in trade networks across the region. These shells, often originating from the Indian and Pacific Oceans, were highly valued for their durability and distinctive appearance. Their use as money dates back centuries and continues to influence various aspects of West African culture.
